Shifting Up. Jul 16, 2010. #1. Hi, my 90 300tdi year 97 150k has gradually become very sluggish and underpowered its pretty much like a NA 60-65 flat out. no smoke, starts easy. Just serviced it. So far Checked pump timing/cambelt, injector diaphram, all hoses/connections. It also is a bit tappety noise on tick over and while driving it.
right, all these quantities are from memory Engine - 6.5 litres of good quality 15/40 mineral or semi synthetic oil. Manual Gearbox - 2.5 litres of ATF Dextron 2, or MTF 94. Transfer box - 3 litres of EP 80w90. Axles - 2 litres of EP 80w90. Power steering - also uses ATF, but not sure on quantity. As for diesel, The Series II Discovery, never came with a 200 or 300tdi engine. It only came with the TD5 engine. You might be better off using the MB 5 Cylinder diesel as used in the Sprinter van. There are already adapters out there for this proven combination to the drivetrain.
I would check it is the turbo and not the stem seals. If it is the stems, then have the head reconned and then refit it, leaving the rest of the engine well enough alone. A standard 300tdi in either auto or manual form is fine for pretty much anything. As said the engine is on 80k, as it had a recon engine at 120k.ENGINE DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION 15 OPERATION The 300 TDi is a 4 cylinder, water cooled, turbocharged diesel engine with a capacity of 2.5 litres.
